Ceramic braces

Here at Riverside Dental we are pleased to offer fixed ceramic braces treatment to patients who wish to straighten their teeth.

This is a very popular treatment option, especially for adult patients, as the braces are very discreet. Although they are fixed and cannot be removed, the brackets and wires used are clear or tooth coloured, meaning they are virtually undetectable. Many of our patients are surprised that their friends, colleagues, and family hardly notice their new braces!

With ceramic braces, traditional methods of orthodontics are used to gently move the teeth into the desired position over time. Brackets and wires will be fixed to your teeth and your dental team will see you regularly to check the progress of your treatment and tighten or change the wires. Using these traditional methods is very effective and you will find that you can achieve the results of straight smile in a faster timeframe than you may have expected.

Metal braces

While there are many new systems for straightening teeth such as invisible braces, clear braces, tooth-coloured braces or fast braces, in some cases traditional metal braces are the most appropriate option. This may be due to the complexity of your individual case - traditional braces usually offer the most effective solution for straightening even the most crooked of smiles.

This method of tooth straightening involves the use of metal braces, which consist of silver brackets that are fixed to the teeth with a silver wire connecting them. While this type of treatment used to carry a stigma, we are seeing that metal braces are now widely embraced by many of our patients, who wear them with pride.

Metal braces are also a more budget friendly means of straightening your teeth, so if you have previously found that a straight smile is out of your reach, we may just have the right orthodontic solution for you.

ORTHODONTIC BRACES

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW

What are braces?

Braces are an orthodontic solution that use a combination of brackets secured to the teeth, wires and elastics to apply gentle and consistent pressure to the teeth in order to move the position of the teeth and jaw. The brackets and wires are usually made from grey metal, but modern braces are also now available in coloured metals and clear acrylic, giving you some control over your appearance during your treatment.

Are fixed braces suitable for me?

Every patient is different with unique needs, but we will be able to tell you if fixed braces are suitable for you during your initial consultation in Norwich. We will take into consideration your budget, smile goals, and lifestyle factors when providing solutions for you.

Do fixed braces hurt?

When your new braces are first fitted, or when the wires have been adjusted, they can cause an aching sensation. This is easily managed with painkillers, such as paracetamol, and a soft diet. If your fixed braces rub on the inside of your cheeks, you can apply a special wax to help prevent this, which we will provide as part of your treatment.

How much does fixed braces treatment cost?

Fixed braces treatment at Riverside Dental in Norwich costs from £5495. The price will depend on your precise treatment needs and we will be able to give you a clear indication of the cost during your consultation.

How often do braces need to be adjusted?

Every patient is unique and so too is the rate at which their teeth move in response to treatment. However, most braces patients will need to visit their dentist for adjustments approximately every 8 to 10 weeks. This appointment will also be used to check the health of your teeth and monitor the progress of your treatment.

Can I continue to eat what I want when wearing braces?

Unfortunately, people who braces will have to adjust their diet for the duration of their treatment. This is because anything that is particularly hard, sticky or chewy could damage your brace and cause problems with the progress of your treatment. Things like steak, biscuits, chewy candy, gum and popcorn are off limits. Your braces dentist will give you a list of the foods that you should avoid during your treatment.

How can I take care of my teeth when I’m wearing braces?

Unsurprisingly, brushing your teeth properly and flossing are much more difficult and time-consuming when wearing braces. This is because you need to carefully negotiate around the brackets and wires to reach all areas of the teeth. Your dentist will almost certainly advise that you start to use interdental brushes in addition to your regular toothbrush, as these are smaller and more successful in reaching the small gaps between teeth and wires, as well as between the teeth themselves.

Maintaining a robust oral hygiene routine is essential when wearing braces, as if you don’t brush and floss properly, you are more likely to develop gum disease which is bad news for your teeth and oral health.

How can I take care of my teeth when I’m wearing braces?

It is important to clean your teeth for two minutes twice a day, even while you have fixed braces. However, it is quite easy to do so, and your dental team will explain how to keep your new braces clean and free from plaque. We suggest keeping a toothbrush with you so that you can brush after mealtimes to avoid food becoming trapped in your fixed braces. There are special brushes to make it easier to clean around your braces and between the teeth, as it will not be possible to use regular dental floss.
