What are braces?

Dental braces are fixed orthodontic appliances used to correct a series of alignment issues, such as gapped, crooked or crowded teeth. So, how does brace treatment work?

Braces are an orthodontic solution that uses a combination of brackets secured to the teeth, wires and elastics to apply gentle and consistent pressure to the teeth in order to move the position of the teeth and jaw.

The brackets and wires are usually made from grey metal, but modern braces are now available with ceramic tooth-coloured brackets, as well as coloured metals and clear acrylic, giving you some control over your appearance during your treatment.

Your dental team will see you regularly to check the progress of your treatment and tighten or change the wires to ensure the correct amount of pressure is being applied.

Using traditional braces is very effective and patients find that they can achieve the results of a straight smile in a faster timeframe than expected.

At our modern practice in Norwich, treatment is completed and overseen by a skilled and competent orthodontist who is an expert in dental alignment with advanced training, so you can relax knowing you're receiving the best oral care.

Ceramic braces

We're pleased to provide fixed ceramic braces to patients who wish to straighten their teeth discreetly.

With ceramic braces, traditional methods of orthodontics are used to gently move the teeth into the desired position over time.

This is a very popular treatment option among adult patients, as the braces are inconspicuous compared with metal braces.

Ceramic braces use clear or tooth-coloured brackets and wires, making them almost undetectable. Many of our patients are surprised that their family, friends and colleagues hardly notice their new braces!

Ceramic braces

Metal braces

Metal braces consist of silver brackets that are fixed to the teeth with a silver wire connecting them. While this type of alignment treatment used to carry a stigma, we are seeing that metal braces are now widely embraced by many of our patients who wear them with pride.

While there are many new options for straightening teeth such as invisible braces, clear aligners, tooth-coloured braces or fast braces, traditional metal braces are sometimes the most appropriate option.

This may be due to your budget or the complexity of your case.

Plus, this method usually offers the most effective solution for straightening the most crooked smiles.

ORTHODONTIC BRACES

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW

Are fixed braces suitable for me?

Every patient is different and has unique needs, but we will be able to tell you if fixed braces are suitable for you during your initial consultation in Norwich.

We will take into consideration your budget, smile goals, and lifestyle factors when providing solutions for you.

If you decide that fixed brace treatment isn't for you, we may suggest looking at alternatives such as clear aligners. For example, Invisalign uses clear aligner trays to discreetly move your teeth.

Do fixed braces hurt?

When your new braces are first fitted, or when the wires have been adjusted, they can cause an aching sensation. This is easily managed with painkillers, such as paracetamol, and a soft diet. If your fixed braces rub on the inside of your cheeks, you can apply a special wax to help prevent this, which we will provide as part of your treatment.

How much does fixed braces treatment cost?

Fixed braces treatment at Riverside Dental in Norwich costs from £5495. The price will depend on your precise treatment needs and we will be able to give you a clear indication of the cost during your consultation.

How often do braces need to be adjusted?

Every patient is unique and so too is the rate at which their teeth move in response to treatment. However, most braces patients will need to visit their dentist for adjustments approximately every 8 to 10 weeks. This appointment will also be used to check the health of your teeth and monitor the progress of your treatment.

Can I continue to eat what I want when wearing braces?

Unfortunately, people who have braces will have to adjust their diet for the duration of their treatment.

This is because anything that is particularly hard, sticky or chewy could damage your brace and cause problems with the progression of your treatment.

Things like steak, biscuits, chewy or hard sweets, gum and popcorn are off-limits. Your dentist will give you a list of foods that you should avoid during your treatment.

How can I take care of my teeth when I’m wearing braces?

Unsurprisingly, brushing your teeth properly and flossing are much more difficult and time-consuming when wearing braces.

This is because you need to carefully navigate around the brackets and wires to reach all areas of the teeth. Your dentist will almost certainly advise that you start to use interdental brushes in addition to your regular toothbrush, as these are smaller and more successful in reaching the small gaps between teeth and wires, as well as between the teeth themselves.

Maintaining a robust oral hygiene routine is essential when wearing braces - if you don’t brush and floss properly, you are more likely to develop gum disease which is bad news for your teeth and oral health.

How many times a day should I brush my teeth when wearing braces?

It is important to clean your teeth for two minutes twice a day, even while you have fixed braces. It’s easy to do so, and your dental team will explain how to keep your new braces clean and free from plaque.

We suggest keeping a toothbrush with you so that you can brush after mealtimes to avoid food becoming trapped in your fixed braces.

There are special brushes to make it easier to clean around your braces and between the teeth, as it will not be possible to use regular dental floss.

How much do braces at Riverside Dental cost?

Braces are viewed as a fantastic investment for your long-term oral health and smile. Teeth that are properly aligned are less likely to be affected by decay and gum disease, and patients feel happier and more confident in their smile.

Braces at Riverside Dental start at £5495 (based on upper and lower teeth straightening). We are able to offer a range of payment plans* which could help you to spread the cost of treatment.
