an introduction to

dental emergencies

Dental emergencies often happen when we least expect them.

Any injury or issue affecting the mouth can often seem worse than it actually is. This is especially true when there is blood involved, since blood mixes with saliva and increases in volume. It’s important that whatever your dental emergency, you don’t panic and get in touch with your dentist as soon as possible.

There may be things that you can or should do until you can see your dentist. Your dental team will advise you of the best way to care for your mouth and teeth until you can see a professional.

DENTAL EMERGENCIES

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW

How do I know if my dental problem is an emergency?

Dental emergencies take many different shapes and forms. Some of the most common include:

  • A knocked-out tooth

  • A cracked, chipped or broken tooth

  • Severe swelling of the gum, mouth or jaw

  • Persistent bleeding from the mouth

  • A broken dental restoration

  • A suspected broken jaw

  • Severe toothache that isn’t relieved using over the counter pain medications

If you experience any of the issues listed above, you should make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible.

What can an emergency dentist do for me?

Exactly what will happen at your emergency dentist appointment will depend on the type of problem you are experiencing. For example, if you have a knocked-out tooth, your dentist will do everything possible to see if it can be replaced. If you are suffering from an abscess, you may be given antibiotics and pain medication to help get it under control. Your dentist will have the skill and experience required to assess your injury or issue and provide the most appropriate care.

What should I do for a knocked-out tooth?

A knocked-out tooth is a very common dental emergency, but many people are unaware that what they do between their accident and reaching their dentist could make the difference as to whether their tooth is successfully replaced or not. If you or someone you are with has a tooth knocked out, such as by a blunt force trauma to the face, you should try and retrieve the tooth to take to your dentist. Take care not to touch the root and place it into a glass of milk or water to preserve it. If the tooth is intact, it may be possible to reattach it.

Can you repair a broken tooth or dental restoration the same day?

In most cases, if you visit your emergency dentist because you have a broken tooth or restoration, you will be given a temporary repair that will restore the function of your teeth until a permanent solution can be arranged. For example, if you lose a crown, you will be fitted with a temporary variety until a new, custom-designed crown can be arranged for you.
