Dental Crowns

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW

What are dental crowns?

Dental crowns are tooth-shaped hollow caps that sit over the top of natural teeth, covering them completely right down to the gum line. They can be used to protect and strengthen weak, damaged teeth as well as to improve their appearance. Crowns can be made from several materials including metal and porcelain. Metal crowns are less attractive, but stronger than porcelain alternatives. Many patients choose porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns as a compromise between the two as they have the durability of metal crowns, and the appearance of porcelain ones.

How will my tooth need to be prepared?

Preparation for a dental crown usually involves some of the natural tooth being filed down so that the crown fits properly over the top. However, in some cases there may not be enough natural tooth structure left, and in this instance the tooth may need to be built up. Crowns can also be created as artificial teeth to be used in dental implants. Porcelain varieties will need to be colour-matched to the same shade as your natural teeth for greater discretion.

What is the process to receive a dental crown?

Dental crowns are applied in several steps.

  • Anaesthetic is used to numb the area around the affected tooth, which will then be prepared by filling it down or building it up.

  • Impressions are taken which will be used to create your bespoke crown.

  • A temporary crown made of plastic is put over the tooth until the crown has been made. You’ll need to take special care with your temporary crown as it won’t be as strong as the final one.

  • Once the crown is ready, you’ll return to Riverside Dental Norwich to have the crown checked and secured into place using special glue.

How long do crowns last?

If you take good care of your teeth and gums, your dental crown could last upwards of a decade. Your dentist will advise you of the best way to keep your crown in great condition and looking fantastic.
