What ARE

Dental implants in Norwich?

Dental implants, also known as teeth implants, are artificial titanium tooth roots designed to replace missing, damaged or lost teeth.

An implant is a permanent solution to tooth loss consisting of three parts: a titanium screw that is surgically inserted into the jaw, an abutment and an artificial crown, bridge or denture.

At Riverside Dental, we offer various dental implant treatments to combat varying degrees of tooth loss:

- Single tooth implants - ideal for those who only require one new tooth.
- Multiple dental implants - for patients that need two or three teeth replacing.

What ARE THE

BENEFITS OF Dental implants?

Dental implants offer numerous desirable advantages that other tooth replacement procedures can't rival, such as:

They look and feel like natural teeth

With dental implants, you'll forget you even have artificial teeth given their likeness to real ones. In terms of appearance, stability and function, they're almost indistinguishable. So, you can smile and eat without worrying they'll loosen or look unnatural.

They don't impact your neighbouring teeth

Different to a bridge, dental implants in Norfolk don't require structural support from adjacent teeth and therefore won't damage them.

They enhance your facial structure

dental implants help to maintain your facial structure as they prevent the bone loss that causes facial changes such as collapsed cheeks and bite misalignment.

They're easy to maintain

Dental implants in Norfolk are cleaned as you would your regular teeth, unlike removable dentures. This includes brushing twice daily, rinsing your mouth with mouthwash and flossing.

They're long-lasting

All before and after pictures, 3D scans and x-rays relating to your dental implant treatment.with the correct dental care such as regular dental check-ups and bi-daily brushing, dental implants can last over two decades.

dental implants

the process

The process to get dental implants usually takes place over several different appointments. These could look something like this:

1

The consultation

This is where your implant dentist will assess the health and condition of your teeth and mouth to determine if you're a good candidate for dental implants, although this may happen at a secondary visit.

Images of your teeth and mouth are needed to check the quality of your bone density and assess whether any outstanding dental treatment needs to be carried out before you start treatment.

If you're currently suffering from a periodontal disease such as gum disease, this will need to be treated before we can proceed with the process.

Additionally, if your bone density is insufficient, your implant dentist may recommend a bone graft. Bone grafting boosts the level of bone in the jaw to support dental implants.

2

SECONDARY APPOINTMENT/Planning visit

This visit will be used to plan out your dental implant treatment, such as scheduling an appointment at a date and time that suits you.

Here, your dentist will go through the events of the day from start to finish and answer any questions you may have about the procedure.

3

implant placement

The next visit will be used to place the implant post/s into the jawbone. This is done surgically, and you will be given a local anaesthetic to ensure that you aren’t in any discomfort.

An incision is made into the gum to access the bone, and then a hole is drilled within which the post will sit. Once in place, your implant dentist will close the gums over the incision and leave the area to heal while osseointegration takes place. This is where the titanium root fuses to your jawbone.

A temporary crown will be fitted during the healing process. In the meantime, your bespoke crowns will be created at a dental laboratory in the perfect shape, size and colour to replace your missing teeth.

4

Crown placement

Once your dentist has confirmed that your implant posts are securely anchored to the jaw, your crowns can be attached to them using special connectors called abutments. The fit of your crowns will be checked before they are secured in place. Again, the gum will need to be opened to reveal the post for the connectors to be attached, and local anesthetic will be used. Once your crowns are in place, your treatment will be complete.

dental implants

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are a unique and modern way of replacing teeth that have fallen out or been extracted. Unlike other tooth replacement solutions, dental implants are focused on a titanium post that is surgically placed into the jawbone. This post acts as an anchor for the restoration, making it more stable, secure and long-lasting than alternative techniques. The visible part of the tooth – a custom-designed crown – is then connected to the post, completing the restoration.

How do dental implants work?

Dental implants rely on a process called osseointegration. This is a biological process where the jawbone that is damaged to place the implant posts heals, closing around the implant to anchor it permanently into the mouth. If osseointegration doesn’t happen, the implant could fail. However, for this process to be successful, patients must have enough healthy bone in their jaw.

What if I don’t have enough healthy bone to support implants?

The density and quality of your jawbone will be assessed at your consultation. If your dental implant dentist decides that you don’t have sufficient bone in your jaw, you may need to have a procedure called bone grafting before you can get dental implants. This is where additional bone is grafted onto the jaw to improve its strength and density.

How many dental implants can I have?

Every patient is different and dental implants can be used to replace single or multiple missing teeth. If you have several missing teeth in a row, you may be recommended to have an implant-supported bridge or denture. This is where a custom-designed denture is created and supported on implant posts rather than sitting directly onto the gum tissue. The more teeth you are having replaced, the most implant posts you will need to support them. For example, dentures usually require four implants to secure them.

How long does it take to get dental implants?

The entire dental implant process usually takes between four and six months, and this is because it takes time for the implants to be encased in the jawbone. In terms of the actual surgery, it takes around 60 minutes to place one implant. Depending on how many implants you are having, it may be necessary to have your surgery spread over several appointments.

Are dental implants painful?

Your dental implant procedure will perform your dental implant treatment using local anesthetic, meaning that you won’t feel any discomfort during the surgery itself. However, it is normal to experience some swelling and soreness at the site of the surgery for several days following implant placement. Full post-operative care will be provided by your implant dentist and will be explained before the surgery. You will be able to take some over the counter pain relief to help you to control your discomfort.

How long do dental implants last?

With proper care and attention, including daily brushing and flossing to prevent gum disease, dental implants typically last longer than any other dental restoration. Your dentist will give you specific advice for taking care of your dental implants.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

There are many benefits of dental implants, including:
