an introduction to
Root canal treatment is a common dental procedure that is used to treat infections that occur in the centre part of the tooth.
These infections usually occur due to severe decay or damage that has enabled bacteria to penetrate the innermost layers of the tooth. Each tooth root extends into the jawbone and is responsible for anchoring the tooth in position in your mouth. It’s important to note that a single tooth can have more than one root canal. In fact, it’s not unusual for pre-molars and molars to have as many as four. Any or all of these can become infected.
Since oral antibiotics are ineffective at treating root canal infections, root canal treatment is the only effective method of saving the tooth. Root canal treatment involves removing infected material from the tooth root and sealing it so that no further bacteria can get inside. It is performed using local anesthetic, meaning it is largely painless.
