A ‘scale and polish’ is the term used to describe a professional dental clean that is performed in-office, usually by your hygienist.
The purpose of scaling and polishing is to remove the hard tartar that forms on your teeth like the scale inside a kettle. Tartar is hardened plaque, that wasn’t removed using a regular toothbrush or floss quickly enough. Unfortunately, you can’t remove tartar just by brushing your teeth. Instead, professional equipment is needed to eliminate it.
Scaling also removed trapped food and plaque that may still be present on your teeth despite brushing. Removing this promptly doesn’t only stop it turning into tartar. It will also help prevent decay and staining.
Scaling and polishing can be carried out using either manual or electric scalers and polishers. Manual scalers come in different sizes, which may mean your hygienist has to switch which one they are using depending on where in your mouth they are working. Meanwhile, electric scalers use very fast vibrations with water to successfully remove the tartar from your teeth.

Many people find that scaling and polishing doesn’t cause any discomfort. However, if you have gum disease and it’s necessary for your hygienist to clean below the gums, it is known as root planing and can be uncomfortable. If you require this service, you’ll be given local anaesthetic to prevent you from experiencing any pain.
